Week 11 College Basketball Rankings

College Basketball Top 25

  1. Houston | Prev: 1 | Beat Cincinatt, USF |

Though Houston currently is the #1 team in the country, there is some concern. That concern is their strength of schedule. They’re 1-1 in their two top 25 games this season, but are otherwise flawless. We likely won’t see them play another Top 25 team in AAC conference play, but if they stay undefeated in conference play, there shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

  1. Kansas | Prev: 2 | Beat Oklahoma, Iowa State |

Though Kansas has played 7 quad 1 games, they only have one loss to a very good Tennessee team. They’ve played many of these games extremely close, playing 8 teams within 6 points. They have shown their ability to blow out some teams, but it seems they have played good defenses very close. This is something to be concerned about come March, but it hasn’t affected their record so far.

  1. Purdue | Prev: 3 | Beat Penn State, Nebraska |

Purdue has some very solid wins, beating Gonzaga and Marquette, who are both top 25, as well as beating a couple of other tournament and bubble teams. However, they lost to a very solid Rutgers team, so they lost their #1 ranking and questions started to arise about the team. Rutgers held them to 64 points and kept Zach Edey and Fletcher Loyer from taking over. Purdue will need to find another reliable scoring option, but until then, here’s where they sit.

  1. Alabama | Prev: 4 | Beat Arkansas, LSU |

Alabama is currently the hottest and most dominant team in the country. Despite losing to two top 10 teams, they have the best win in the country over Houston and are undefeated in SEC play. They’ve won each SEC game by an average of 22.8 points, and though the SEC is deep, Tennessee may be the only team that can challenge them.

  1. UCLA | Prev: 7 | Beat Utah, Colorado |

UCLA started the season 3-2, losing to the only two ranked teams they played early in the season. However, they now hold one of the country’s longest, not losing a game since they were 3-2. However, no team on their entire schedule is currently ranked, and though they have played many tournament teams, it’s difficult to bring them to a top 5 ranking with no wins over currently ranked teams. But, there aren’t many teams that have looked as solid as the Bruins, so I'll give it to them.

  1. Gonzaga | Prev: 8 | Beat BYU, Portland |

Gonzaga and head coach Mark Few received a lot of criticism for their non-conference record early, going 1-3 against ranked teams. However, similarly to UCLA, they haven’t lost a game since then and beat Alabama, which remains one of the best wins in the nation. Though they have played a harder schedule, they haven’t been as dominant as UCLA, playing San Fransisco, Santa Clara, and BYU very close. It is concerning, but that Alabama win gives a sign that their March Madness failures could come to an end.

  1. Texas | Prev: 10 | Beat TCU, Texas Tech |

Despite losing their head coach, Texas has been one of the most consistent teams in college basketball this season. They only have 2 losses to good Kansas State and Illinois teams, but beat two top-25 teams in TCU and Gonzaga. I think that will stay the same, and they should find themselves in another high seed come March.

  1. Tennessee | Prev: 5 | Beat Vanderbilt, lost to Kentucky |

Tennessee has been very inconsistent, losing to a bad Colorado team and a Kentucky team that had just loss to South Carolina. These games were both close, but they did not shoot well from the 3, shooting 14% against Kentucky and 27% against Colorado. When they do shoot well, they’ve been very hard to beat, so another SEC tournament run is imminent if they can figure that out.

  1. Xavier | Prev: 12 | Beat Creighton, Marquette |

Xavier is coming off wins against Marquette, Villanova, UConn, and Creighton, and is the number one Big East team after UConn’s loss to St. John’s. They’re on an 11-game winning streak after starting 4-3, and the duo of UTEP transfer Souley Boum and big man Jack Nunge are one of the best duos in the Big East. They’re well coached, talented, and are starting to get recognized as a national title contender.

  1.  Virginia | Prev: 13 | Beat North Carolina, Florida State |

Virginia is back to looking like the team they looked like in Vegas, where the Cavaliers beat Baylor and Illinois, winning the Roman Main Event. Against Florida State recently, the Hoos shot 50% from 3, similar to the 64% they shot against Baylor. If they can keep up this shooting, their defense will always have their backs and Virginia should be back in the national title conversation.

  1.      Arizona | Prev: 9 | Beat Oregon State, lost to Oregon |

  2.      UConn | Prev: 6 | Lost to Marquette, St. John’s |

  3.      Iowa State | Prev: 14 | Beat Texas Tech, lost to Kansas |

  4. TCU | Prev: 17 | Beat Kansas State, lost to Texas |

  5.      Kansas State | Prev: 11 | Beat Oklahoma State, lost to TCU |

  6.      Miami | Prev: 16 | Beat Boston College, lost to NC State

  7.      Auburn | Prev: 21 | Beat Mississippi State, Ole Miss |

  8. Charleston | Prev: 22 | Beat UNC Wilmington, Elon |

  9.      Baylor | Prev: NR | Beat West Virginia, Oklahoma State |

  10. Marquette | Prev: 25 | Beat UConn, lost to Xavier |

  11.      Providence | Prev: 19 | Beat St. John’s, lost to Creighton |

  12.  FAU | Prev: NR | Beat North Texas, FIU |

  13. Clemson | Prev: NR | Beat Louisville, Duke |

  14. Illinois | Prev: NR | Beat Nebraska, Michigan State |

  15. NC State | Prev: NR | Beat Virginia Tech, Miami |
